A Day Without Immigrants

Graphic from Send-A-Brick

Yesterday was the nationwide event dubbed "A Day Without Immigrants." No, no, they didn't mean that the illegal immigrants had gone home. It was the day the illegal immigrants used to show the "economic clout" they have on the US economy. I personally didn't notice any thing different about yesterday than any other day. I actually noticed that most people didn't even know there was a boycott going on. While waiting to leave lunch at the Chinese restaurant, I saw two guys walk up to the Mexican restaurant next door. It was of course closed and I could hear the two guys talking with each other trying to figure out why it would be closed at lunch time.

Many people fail to realize that the US does not need illegal immigrants to survive. The US needs illegal immigrants to survive on cheap labor. I guarantee that any shortage of labor created from the mass deportation of illegal immigrants would be met by the skilled labor of legal citizens, only at a slightly higher rate. "We want to show the government that all the work in this country is impossible without us," said Mendez, who is El Salvadoran. I believe he meant to say "We want to show the government that all the cheap work in this country is impossible without us."

At Davis Construction, a large Rockville-based general contractor, many of the workers were absent yesterday. "We are missing them," chief executive Jim Davis said. "It is having an impact." I can tell you why they are being missed by Davis Construction. Without the illegal immigrants, all the jobs that Davis Construction bid out at a lower rate by using illegal immigrant laborers will now not come in under budget because they will be forced to abide by the law and hire legal workers.

"Economists say that despite the temporary pain caused by the boycott, the economic impact will probably be short-lived, since protesters who avoided shopping or working yesterday to honor the boycott are likely to make up for lost time when they return today." - signonsandiego.com.

So, in support of my belief that "A Day Without Immigrants" should have been the day where the INS actually took a proactive approach to doing their job, I have decided to purchase a brick from http://www.send-a-brick.com. This website lets you purchase bricks to send to Congress to allow everyone to do their fair share in protecting our country's borders.
