The other night my wife got a message on my cellphone from Wachovia Loss Management. They said that they were calling to confirm some charges on her(our) account and could we please call this 800 number. I went on to Google and did a search for that number. No hits. I then searched Wachovia.com. No hits there either.

Of course by this time I'm very interested to know why someone is calling from Wachovia, yet the number they leave to return the call on is not listed on their website. I give them a call to see what is what. The first thing the phone system asks for is a credit card number. I quickly enter # and wait for someone to come on the line. Once I get someone on the phone, I ask them to confirm any piece of information from one of my accounts to let me know that he actually works for Wachovia. Of course he isn't able to do that, since he doesn't have "access" to that information. So I ask him to tell me the Director of Loss Management(pdf). He gives me a name. Obviously not the one located on their website. So I ask him why the name he gave me isn't the same as the one on their website. He tells me that he thought I wanted his bosses name, and he doesn't know who the director of his department is. I tell him that I am going to have to call the 800 number listed on Wachovia.com.

Once I get someone on the line from the 800 number listed on Wachovia.com, he asks me to put my wife on the line since it is her card that is in question. He proceeds to ask a series of questions to ensure that she is who she says she is. He asks for her birthday, last four of her social security number, and what state issued her social security card. She confirms that the charges were made by her and then he is about to end the call.

I quickly ask, how by asking those questions he as confirmed it was her. I ask him what if my son(who is only 11 months old, but he doesn't know this) were to answer all those questions. He says that he knows when someone is lieing. A human lie detector. Wachovia must have advance humans working for them. So I ask him to ask me that same questions that he asked her and see if I can authenicate myself as my wife.

He tells me he doesn't understand where I am going with this and asks if I have any other questions.

Obviously, Wachovia, you might want to train your employees to know who the director of their departments are. Also, if you need a security consultant give me a ring, because your security is lacking.
