Welcome to the Suck
It's been nearly ten years since the original Total Annihilation was released by Chris Taylor over at the now defunct Cavedog Entertainment (now owned by Atari). Supreme Commander, Total Annihilation's successor is geared to be the greatest RTS ever created.

"According to the PC Gamer article, Supreme Commander will be unique amongst the countless members of the RTS genre in that it integrates grand-strategy ("Risk-like") mode with real-time, individual, ground-level battles. This may sound similar to systems found in games such as Rise of Nations or Total War, but in Supreme Commander this integration will allegedly be seamless. It will be a matter of zooming in or out on the map to go from the god's eye view of the entire theatre of war, where icons represent armies, down to observing skirmishes amongst individual units."
What does this all mean?
The word on the street is that say you are fighting a battle on planet A, and you need to call in reinforcements from planet B. You will zoom out from the battle on planet A, past the planet level of zoom, move the screen over to planet B and zoom back in, never leaving the field of battle "screen".

Another item that has many gamers sitting on edge is the use of multiple screens while in game. No one has said how this will be done, since most games will not display 3D graphics on the slave monitor.

Total Annihiliation is basicly what jump started by interest in computers. While a sophomore in high school, I got a job as a computer tech at a local computer store. Since we were never making sales, me and the other techs decided to start playing games on some of the computers. We had a handful of copies of Total Annilation sitting around, so we fired them up.

We were hooked. I can remember being at the shop until 1am playing. Then it dawned on us that we could "network" these computers and allow us to kill each other in late night battles. It was on! We started playing around the clock for days on end. My wife will need to start drafting the hate mail letter to send to Gas Powered Games for taking her husband away. Vista or Supreme Commander. Which will I buy myself for my birthday? Take a guess.
